Daddy Tiger's Music Profile

Q. How would you describe your music?

I have always been an eclectic composer. I started off doing 60's rock but now I write everything from Jazz and R&B, to techno, to Hard Rock, to Psychedelic world music. Check out my Music Download Page for more.

Q. Do you have a particular vision for your movie music?

The music in most porn movies (and the gay/SM bar scene for that matter) is so tired. If I hear "Everybody Dance Now" one more time I'm gonna start shooting! The scene is desperatly in need of some modern music: I'm working on something fresh for the SM scene: a new fusion of hard rock, rap, jazz, jungle beats, and dance/techno music with lyrics based on gay and S&M themes. For example, see the music/video "I Want to Hurt Somebody"

Q. Who are your musical influences?

My influences are as eclectic as my music: everything from Nine Inch Nails, to Kid Rock "Devil Without a Cause"; TOOL and Pink Floyd to Dead Can Dance, Miles Davis, Booker T and the MGs, Snoop Dog, and many others.

Q. What's in your car CD player right now?

Li'l John "Krunk Juice"

Q. How long have you been playing? What instruments do you play?

I've been in bands on and off since I was 14 in 1964. I do vocals, guitar, keyboards, sequencer, hand drums... I can play just about any instrument I pick up.

Q. What's your background in music?

I started playing drums in elementary school band. My parents had a copy of Carmen McRae and Sammy Davis Junior sing "Porgy and Bess", when I heard Carmen sing "I loves you Porgy" my hair stood up and I knew I had to be a singer someday.

I saw the Beatles live on 8/23/1964 and I immediately went out and joind a garage band (the original "THE") as a singer. We even won the Park and Rec department battle of the bands. I was in a bunch of bands as a teenager, building my singing ability in immitation of singers like Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. I spent 1967 to 1970 hitchhiking back and forth between San Fransisco and LA, singing in bands, and dropping a lot of acid.

In the summer of 1969 I was in a coffeehouse band playing guitar and singing original tunes when my band got the chance to open the San Jose rock festival, headlined by the Jefferson Airplaine and the Grateful Dead. The show started late, so my picture ended up in the San Jose Mercury News rather than one of the headliners! I was only 18 at the time and a chronic acidhead.

I spent the early 70s working as a professional rock band singer. I sang in a hard rock group, a jazz group, a folk/gospel group, and several others. I even opened for the Monkeys. I heard Stevie Wonder (who is 6 months younger than me) on the radio and decided to change musical styles to the black gospel style he sang. I got so good at it that black people outside the clubs assumed I was black. I won't go into all my road stories here, suffice it to say I have enough of them to fill several novels.

In the early 80s I settled down and quit touring. I had a one-man school-auditorium show and did over 1000 performances. I starred in a church musical specificly written for me, and worked professionally as an audio engineer for many years.

Q. You must've seen some really cool performances back in the day...

Sure I did. The coolest had to be the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars (1966) featuring The Zombies, because I got to meet the man himself backstage and talk about my career. I was 15 and I was taller than he was! Other all-time coolest shows include:

  • Beatles '64
  • Rolling Stones '66 (Paint it Black tour -- they didn't even sell out the hall!)
  • Led Zepplin '69
  • Jeff Beck w/ Rod Stewart '69
  • Lou Rawls '77
